The Weaning Process - How Baby Jessica Is Dealing With Food

As the next step in baby Jessica's life begins I can't believe where the last 4 months have gone. Everytime I write a parenting post I take a pause and think back to when I found out I was pregnant and then how I prepared for motherhood. Reflecting on what seems a lifetime ago, there's nothing more I could have done to prepare. The truth is that you're never truly ready because every baby and mother relationship is completely different.

This month, October 2017, I began the arduous task of weaning little Jessica. I wasn't sure whether or not she'd start eating food now but there were some subtle signs that made me wonder if the time was right. The NHS advise that babies stick to breast or formula milk until 6 months but you can start weaning from 4 months.

What signs did I see? Well, you may not agree with me but the signs I took for being ready to start on food were these:

Being able to grab items in her hands.
Capability of holding head up without support.
Taking a big interest in whatever mummy and daddy are eating.
Not spitting out all of the Calpol after the 16 week jabs.

According to some sources on the Internet, one of the signs that a baby is ready for food is that they don't spit it out. Bit of a funny one since you need to try feeding them in order to see if they spit it out, or push it out with their tongue to be more accurate. Not wanting to waste a whole jar of food if she doesn't want it, I picked up a packet of Cow & Gate Banana Porridge. It's a powder based product so you can only mix up a little bit at a time. Meaning less waste. If there's one thing in life I can't stand .. it's wasted food.

Trying food for the first time was a strange thing for both Jessica and me. Watching her face was priceless as she looked at me for reassurance as to what I put in her mouth. Something I will mention is that I introduced her to the Munchkin Weaning Spoons before I began feeding her, so she knew that it was safe and wasn't going to hurt her.

To be fair I could have just fed her off the spoon from the off, but after some Calpol incidents I felt it better to do it a step at a time.

As far as I'm aware Jessica is taking to food okay. I deliberately opted for the banana porridge instead of plain to help her begin experiencing new tastes. I want Jessica to grow up with a healthy lifestyle so giving her fruity tastes is a way I'm hoping to introduce a love of fruit.

Next on the list will be jars of food. I'm really hoping to be able to give Jessica a chicken roast dinner jar in December so she can have a Christmas dinner with us. Whether or not that happens, who knows. Only time will tell.
