Blooming Fiction Meets Jan Ellis

Creator of some of the best novellas I've ever read, I'm delighted to introduce you to Jan Ellis.

This isn't the first time that Jan's name has appeared on Blooming Fiction. You may have seen my book review of her fab novella The Bookshop Detective back in March 2017. This has ultimately been my favourite of her stories so far but I'm sure she has some awesome reads in progress.

I put Jan under the spotlight and this is what happened.

1. Do you have a special place where you gather your thoughts and ideas for a new story?

The best ideas come when I’m striding across a field or through my local woods. Of course I never have a pen or notebook with me, which could explain why I haven’t yet hit the big time.

2. How do you decide on titles for your books?

Titles are tricky beasts. I tend to jot down key words and think about them while I’m out and about. Eventually a title will form itself. On other occasions the publishers will come up with something.

3. Is there one of your books in particular that you consider the pride of your collection?

I guess my favourite has to be my novella An Unexpected Affair because this was the first fiction I’d written since childhood. It proved to me that I could do it.

4. What’s the strangest thing you’ve been inspired by?

In A Summer of Surprises, sisters Eleanor and Jenna find themselves in a part of Mallorca that is entirely German. A character sets up a chain of sausage stands called ‘Bratwurst Bonanza’ that is entirely inspired by experiencing Bavaria in the Balearics. Most odd.

5. Have you created a character who is the fictional version of you?

I didn’t think I had, but friends say I’m like Rachel in French Kisses. She has a very positive view of life and is game for anything. She also has a rather more thrilling love life than I do!

1. Salt & Vinegar / Cheese & Onion – Cheese & Onion.
2. Sweet / Savoury – Savoury.
3. A week in Florida / A weekend in Paris – Paris, of course.
4. Indoors / Outdoors – Outdoors.

6. Halloween / Christmas – Christmas. I loathe Halloween!
7. Book / Film – Book.
8. Fish and chips / Pie and mash – Fish and chips.
9. DVDs / Netflix – DVDs.

10. Cats / Dogs – Dogs.
